Binter Invests €189M in Eco-Friendly Fleet Expansion

Binter secures major financing for fleet expansion

Binter has finalized a significant financing agreement with a banking consortium comprising Spain’s leading financial institutions—Caixabank, Santander, and BBVA—to fund its fleet expansion program. The deal was signed in Gran Canaria by Binter’s President, Rodolfo Núñez, and its Vice President, Alfredo Morales.

A greener future for regional travel

This operation will see the airline invest €189 million in acquiring nine new ATR 72-600 aircraft. The order includes four firm purchases and five options, with deliveries scheduled between 2027 and 2031. These new-generation planes are equipped with engines that make them the regional aircraft with the lowest emissions on the market. They consume 45% less fuel and emit 45% less CO2 compared to similarly sized regional jets.

Commitment to comfort and sustainability

President Rodolfo Núñez emphasized that “this move reinforces the airline’s firm commitment to guaranteeing maximum comfort and, at the same time, connectivity.” He added, “The extraordinary efficiency of the PW127XT engines, specifically optimized for ATR models, allows us to adopt new standards in reducing fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, and operational costs, enabling the implementation of an aviation model that is increasingly respectful of sustainability.”

Bringing the Canary Island way of flying to more destinations

Vice President Alfredo Morales expressed gratitude for “the renewed confidence of the major national banks in our company’s fleet acquisition operations. This trust allows us to bring our distinctive Canary Island way of flying to more destinations while maintaining our essence.”

A long-standing partnership with ATR

Binter’s fleet modernization has been a continuous process since 2002. Since then, the airline has progressively added aircraft from manufacturer ATR through successive operations, with a total value now exceeding $1.1 billion. In addition to its turboprop fleet, Binter operates 16 Embraer E195-E2 jet aircraft, which have been incorporated since December 2019 to serve national routes to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, as well as longer-range international flights.

The ideal aircraft for inter-island connectivity

Since the historic delivery of its first ATR 72-200 in 1989 by the Italo-French manufacturer, the Canary Islands airline has consistently demonstrated its commitment to providing efficient and comfortable air transport by choosing the most suitable aircraft model for each operational scope. The ATR 72 is Binter’s flagship aircraft for short-haul flights, which include inter-island routes within the Canaries and to Madeira, as well as international routes to airports on the African coast near the archipelago and to Funchal. Its turboprop design gives it the distinct advantage of being able to take off and land on shorter runways. These aircraft feature the latest technological advances and are renowned for their high efficiency, maneuverability, reliability, and low fuel consumption.
