Agaete Unveils Sacred Tree Sculpture
This Thursday morning, Agaete inaugurated a striking sculpture by renowned artist Pepe Dámaso, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Mancomunidad del Norte de Gran Canaria. Titled “Sacred Tree,” the artwork symbolizes the unity of the 11 municipalities that form this regional alliance, as announced by the town council.
Artistic Tribute Across Northern Gran Canaria
The sculpture in Agaete, installed in the recently renovated León y Castillo Square in Puerto de Las Nieves, is one of eleven identical artworks placed at the entrances of northern municipalities. These pieces replicate the Mancomunidad’s logo, originally designed by the Agaete-born artist. The project, costing €141,240, celebrates the alliance’s half-century milestone.
Symbolism and Construction
Local company Antonio Afonso crafted the eleven two-meter-tall concrete sculptures, each mounted on a pedestal bearing the words “Mancomunidad del Norte” alongside the names of all member municipalities. Artist Pepe Dámaso’s signature appears on each piece, though health reasons prevented his attendance at the unveiling.
EU-Funded Regional Development
Tourism and Employment Councillor Jéssica de León attended the ceremony, revealing that the eleven municipalities have jointly submitted various projects to the regional government. These initiatives, totaling €573,520 in investment, are funded by European Next Generation funds, marking a significant boost for northern Gran Canaria’s development.
