Tenerife Party Anthem Captivates the World
“A night of drinks, a crazy night. I kissed other lips, forgot your mouth. I tarnished your image, lost myself alone. And that’s the story…” If you’re from Tenerife and often go to local festivals, you’ve probably known this chorus for years. ‘Noche de Copas’ is one of the most covered songs by the island’s orchestras, so whether at pilgrimages, carnivals, or popular events, you’ve likely danced or sung to it at some point. However, this track is now going much further, having gone viral on social media thanks to a version by a Tenerife orchestra, Nueva Línea, which is currently known across half the world.
The Voices Behind the Viral Sensation
Nueva Línea features four young singers. With their catchy voices and dance moves, these women are taking social media platforms like TikTok by storm, also thanks to the group’s unique style and distinctive musical arrangements. In fact, you only need to take a quick look to find videos of users imitating their steps. Sofía, Raquel, Mayte, and Alicia are the voices of this group, which also includes five other musicians, a sound technician, and a community manager.
“A Brutal Success”
The group’s manager, José Marrero, states that the group’s success “has been brutal.” He has received calls from all over the world, from Latin America to mainland Spain. “It’s madness,” he remarks on the reach of the orchestra’s videos. He confirms that for this year they already have around 70 performances scheduled up to November.
A Professional Show With Deep Roots
Founded in 2003, Nueva Línea specialises in tropical Latin dance music and is led by female soloists with extensive training and experience in the world of entertainment. The formation has meticulously crafted its musical arrangements, always tailored to the group’s personality, as well as the stage presence of its members, resulting in a dynamic, attractive, fun, and participatory show for all types of audiences.
The orchestra has five recorded works, produced by José Marrero, who also acts as producer, and has featured the participation of great musicians from the Canarian music scene. Furthermore, it has numerous music videos and unreleased tracks on its digital platforms, which have boosted the group’s career.
More Than Just One Hit
If ‘Noche de Copas’ is one of their smash hits, with some of their videos surpassing one million views, it is not their only one. ‘La Loba’, ‘Un Beso’, or ‘Volveré’ are some of the tracks that are staples in their performances across the island, and indeed for almost any Canarian orchestra. Their success on social media is such that multiple users utilise their songs to showcase their own dances, making them a triumph at Christmas company dinners, family gatherings, or meet-ups with friends.
In fact, content creator Aitor González (@aitorglezz_), an expert on the island’s festivals, has created a post with the top 5 Nueva Línea songs. Thus, the five best tracks from this orchestra according to the content creator are: Noche de Copas, Un Beso, La Loba, Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido, and Brujería.
The Surprising Origins of a Party Classic
While it’s practically impossible that the song ‘Noche de Copas’ hasn’t appeared on your social media feeds in recent weeks, what is more common is not knowing the origin of this track. ‘Noche de Copas’, composed by Juan Carlos Calderón, was released in 1982 by singer María Conchita Alonso and, although the vast majority of us know it in its merengue version, it was originally a romantic ballad.
