Flight Chaos as Storm Francis Hits Canary Islands
Airports on La Palma, Tenerife and El Hierro experienced significant disruption on Friday due to Storm Francis, which is currently affecting the Canary Islands. According to the Spanish airport authority, Aena, a total of eight flight cancellations and nine diversions were recorded across the three islands.
La Palma Bears the Brunt of Disruption
The island of La Palma was the worst hit by the adverse weather. Its airport saw seven diversions and seven cancellations. One flight was diverted to Gran Canaria, four were sent to Tenerife North, and two to Tenerife South. The cancellations included four flights bound for Tenerife North, two for Gran Canaria, one for Tenerife South, and an additional service from Tenerife North to La Palma.
Further Disruption on El Hierro and Tenerife
El Hierro’s airport also faced problems, with one flight diverted to Gran Canaria and a cancellation on a route to Tenerife North. Meanwhile, at Tenerife North, a flight originating from Sevilla was forced to divert and land at Gran Canaria airport instead.
