A Slice of France in the Heart of La Laguna
The tradition of French patisserie, internationally renowned for its technique, precision, and attention to detail, has found its own special place in Tenerife. In the historic centre of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, an artisan bakery has established itself as a benchmark for those seeking breakfasts and sweet treats made with traditional methods, without sacrificing local Canary Island products and flavours.
An Artisan Ethos in an Historic Setting
Makika&Co opened its doors in February 2016 with a clear idea: to offer a different gastronomic experience based on French pastries, crafted by hand on the premises. Since then, the establishment has become part of daily life in central La Laguna, attracting both residents and visitors alike. Located at Calle Juan, number 15, the shop is housed within an old 18th-century house, a traditional construction that preserves the architectural elements typical of the historic quarter. Inside, a Canarian courtyard with lush vegetation provides a tranquil atmosphere, inviting you to stop and enjoy a gastronomic pause away from the fast pace of modern life.
From Morning Pastries to Light Lunches
Makika&Co is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 to 16:00. It remains closed on Sundays and Mondays for staff rest. The day begins with breakfasts available until 13:00, where their artisan toasts are the star attraction, available in both classic and more creative options. From midday, the café presents a selection of two types of salads, three starters, and three main courses, designed for those wanting a light, homemade, and quality meal.
Throughout the day, the bakery maintains its French essence with a wide variety of artisan pastries and viennoiserie, plus its cheese-filled payés, quiches in different flavours, sandwiches, and toasted sandwiches. The creations can be customised by adding extra ingredients for a supplementary charge, which varies depending on the addition.
Speciality Coffee and Canarian Twists
The local also offers healthier options like a Yogurt Bowl (with banana, seasonal fruit, peanut butter, homemade granola, and chocolate chips) for six euros and a Yogurt Parfait (a glass of yogurt with strawberry compote and homemade granola) for three euros. Coffee is another hallmark of the shop, which serves a selection of speciality coffees roasted on the island of La Palma by the artisans of El Café de Don Manuel, guaranteeing an intense, quality flavour. Milkshakes are another option for treating yourself, ideal for accompanying the pastries.
Furthermore, the bakery offers home-delivered breakfasts with three different menus, priced between €20 and €25, available for delivery only on the island of Tenerife. They also craft bespoke artisan cakes for celebrations, which must be ordered 48 hours in advance and collected exclusively from the shop.
Although Makika&Co is known for its French pastries and careful artisan production, the Canarian essence has a place in its gastronomic offering. Its popular ‘La Canaria’ toast pays homage to the archipelago’s most traditional flavours. It combines sourdough bread with chorizo from Teror and smoked Canarian cheese, a touch of guarapo (palm honey) from La Palma, and a sprinkling of gofio (toasted grain flour). The result is a perfect blend that stands out for its island identity in every bite, while maintaining the establishment’s core essence.
