Tenerife’s Venezuelan Restaurant Serves Spain’s Largest Arepa

Spain’s Largest Arepa Finds a Home in Tenerife

The largest arepa in Spain is in Tenerife, more specifically in the town of Santa Úrsula. What began as a temporary special has turned into a resounding success. This Venezuelan restaurant, Estación 58, has created a culinary marvel: a giant arepa weighing almost a full kilogram.

The Rise of Venezuelan Flavours in the Canaries

In recent years, Venezuelan arepas have carved out a special place in Canarian cuisine. With fillings like the classic ‘reina pepiada’ (shredded chicken with avocado), ‘pelúa’ (shredded beef and yellow cheese), or ‘perico’ (scrambled egg with tomato, onion, and pepper), they have become a favourite meal for both locals and tourists alike.

A Viral Sensation Becomes a Permanent Fixture

The concept at Estación 58 went viral thanks to the creation of the largest arepa in the Canary Islands and all of Spain. During August, the establishment decided to include an XXL version of its signature dish. The success was so immense that they chose to keep it on the menu permanently. The corn dough alone weighs half a kilo, and once stuffed with all its ingredients, it reaches approximately one kilogram. This weight has earned it the official title of the largest arepa in the Canaries and Spain. However, it is only made to order, as it requires a longer cooking and preparation process.

An Authentic Venezuelan Culinary Experience

The restaurant’s menu offers a genuine Venezuelan experience, with starters such as homemade ‘tequeños’ (cheese sticks), ‘patacones’ (fried plantains), or ‘chicharrones’ (pork crackling), alongside traditional drinks like Frescolita or the refreshing ‘papelón con limón’ (lemonade with raw cane sugar). For dessert, diners must try the ‘arepa de Clipper’, a sweet creation honouring the iconic Canarian soft drink, or the ‘chica venezolana’, a creamy drink made with rice, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla. “Every bite transports you straight to Caracas,” assure many customers, who describe the venue as a little corner of Venezuela in the north of Tenerife.

Visit and Practical Information

Estación 58 is located at Carretera Provincial, 34, in Santa Úrsula (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), a must-visit for lovers of Venezuelan food and culinary challenges. The establishment is open from 12:00 noon to 11:00 pm every day, except on 1st January (New Year’s Day) and on the 7th and 8th of January for staff holidays.
