Stormy start to the new year
A cold front associated with the low-pressure system Francis is set to bring a wet and stormy New Year’s Day to Tenerife. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall across the Canary Islands, with Tenerife, La Palma and Gran Canaria expected to be the worst affected.
Official alerts activated
In response to the forecast, the Canary Islands Government has activated official alerts for the risk of heavy rain, rough seas, strong winds and thunderstorms. The adverse weather is initially expected to affect the islands only on 1 January 2026, with conditions forecast to ease by Friday.
