Fuerteventura’s Cofete Gets Eco-Friendly Starlight Lighting

Fuerteventura Council Awards Cofete Starlight Lighting Project

The Island Council of Fuerteventura is closing out 2025 with the awarding of the Starlight Lighting project for Cofete. Announced on Tuesday, the project will expand the number of light points from 11 to 15 and replace traditional fixtures with autonomous, sustainable lighting that is respectful of birds and the night sky. The upgrade is being funded through Next Generation EU funds from the Plan for Tourist Sustainability in Destinations (PSTD), an action included in the ‘Fuerte por Naturaleza’ programme.

A Commitment to Sustainable Tourism and Dark Skies

The council’s contracting board awarded the project from the Department of Tourism to the local company JRM 3.0 S.L. this week. The President of the Council, Lola García, highlighted the importance of fostering the protection of Fuerteventura’s night sky, which is of great scientific, astronomical, and natural value. She explained that this intervention is part of the council’s commitment to sustainable tourism, aiming to preserve the lighting’s integration into the landscape and reduce light pollution to the greatest extent possible.

Reinvesting Tourism Revenue in the Island

The Councillor for Tourism, Marlene Figueroa, defended the action and the importance of developing a tourism policy that reinvests in the destination as part of her department’s strategy. “The management of tourism, as we understand it and as we are developing it, involves generating wealth to reinvest it on the island so that its local economies and people have direct access to the benefits produced by the sector,” she stated. She added that this is achieved whether through employment, the provision of services, the supply of goods, or the enjoyment of investments that improve the island’s infrastructure and landscapes.

Project Details and Environmental Benefits

The awarding of the Starlight Lighting project for Cofete entails the installation of new lighting that is respectful of the night sky and birds, alongside the increase in light points. A key milestone of the project is the improvement of energy efficiency in the village of Cofete through the installation of a photovoltaic public lighting system, aligned with the most demanding sustainability standards. The council notes that the existing luminaires have become obsolete and deteriorated due to the climate and salty environment, making way for a durable, autonomous, and environmentally respectful solution.
