Strongest Canary Islands Quake of the Year Recorded on El Hierro
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded six earthquakes on the island of El Hierro overnight, one of which reached a magnitude of 3.8. According to the EFE news agency, this is the strongest tremor registered in the Canary Islands this year.
Details of the Seismic Activity
The 3.8 magnitude quake was detected in the area of El Pinar at 1:56 am, at a depth of 36 kilometres. The first tremor, however, was a smaller magnitude 1.7 event recorded in Frontera at 00:15. The remaining seismic movements were located to the southwest and west of the municipality of El Pinar between 00:15 and 6:32 in the morning, with magnitudes ranging from 1.2 up to the maximum of 3.8.
No Cause for Alarm
Sources from the IGN have indicated that, in principle, the activity has not continued as a seismic swarm but rather as a main earthquake followed by some aftershocks. Furthermore, the control room of the Canary Islands Coordinating Centre for Rescue and Emergencies has not registered any calls from El Hierro in relation to these movements, as reported to EFE.
