Puerto de la Cruz’s San Antonio Neighbourhood Set for Major Revamp

Major Overhaul Planned for San Antonio Neighbourhood

The San Antonio neighbourhood in Puerto de la Cruz is set for a comprehensive facelift. The area will undergo a complete renewal aimed at generating more green spaces, renovating public areas, and reducing the presence of vehicles on the surface by creating 122 new parking spaces. For now, the initiative is a draft project which could see the light of day in early 2026.

Years of Community Campaigning Bear Fruit

The proposal “brings together years of participatory work and marks the start of a comprehensive renewal of the neighbourhood,” explained the Councillor for Urban Planning, David Hernández. Residents of San Antonio have spent decades calling for recreational areas that meet their needs. One example of this is the complaints about the lack of parking in the area.

Specifically, as detailed by the President of the La Jeringuilla Neighbourhood Association, Dionisio Rodríguez, this project dates back to 2020. That year, residents conducted 103 surveys as part of the ‘Barrios por el clima’ (Neighbourhoods for the Climate) programme, which aims to assess the quality of community spaces. This project, promoted by the Puerto de la Cruz council, seeks to analyse the quality of community spaces in different localities within the municipality.

New Parking and Green Spaces at the Heart of the Plan

According to the councillor, the plan includes the creation of garages and new parking zones. This latter reform will be undertaken particularly around the San Antonio municipal sports centre on Calle El Caminero, taking advantage of the slope of the land to free up surface area for green and community spaces.

Among the most notable changes, the neighbourhood association president highlights the creation of 122 new parking spaces—one of the area’s main demands—as well as the expansion of green zones. “Even though it’s construction work, it’s a benefit for the neighbourhood,” he states.

Next Steps and Community Consultation

For his part, Hernández notes that throughout December new meetings will be held with residents to finalise the design details. The aim is to present the complete project before the end of the year and put it out to tender at the beginning of 2026, “so we can start the works as soon as possible.”

The draft project was presented to the neighbourhood on 19th November, although some residents reported they had not received the proposal. To widen its dissemination, the association plans to move its consultations to the church and local squares to gather further input. “The project is still open and we want all neighbours to have their say,” Rodríguez notes.
