Canary Islands Airports Handle 837 Flights on Christmas Day

Festive surge in Canary Islands air traffic

The eight Aena airports in the Canary Islands will operate a total of 837 flights today, 25 December, Christmas Day. This represents an increase of 43 flights compared to the same day last year, when there were 794 operations.

Island-by-island breakdown for Christmas Day

Breaking down the figures by airport, Gran Canaria will handle the most traffic today with 268 flights. This is followed by Tenerife North with 178, Tenerife South with 129, and Fuerteventura with 100. Furthermore, Lanzarote will see 96 operations, La Palma 50, El Hierro 10, and La Gomera 8.

Busy holiday period across the archipelago

According to data provided to Europa Press by the airport operator, during the Christmas period—from 19 December to 7 January—a total of 24,827 flights are scheduled across the Canary Islands’ airports. This is 1,708 more than the previous year (23,119), although the period is one day longer this year, as the 2024 count ran from 20 December to 7 January.

National context and key festive dates

Meanwhile, across the whole of Spain, Aena’s national airport network expects to operate 3,515 flights this Christmas Day, an 8.7% increase on the year before, making it the quietest day of the end-of-year period. In total, 101,793 flights are forecast for the festive season between 19 December and 7 January 2026, a figure 7.8% higher than in 2024, with one extra day included.

Regarding other key dates, New Year’s Eve will see 4,420 flights registered (57 fewer), while New Year’s Day and Three Kings’ Day will have 4,901 (+452) and 4,595 movements (-24), respectively.

Top Spanish airports for Christmas Day traffic

By airport, the Spanish capital leads the list with 878 operations scheduled for today, an increase of 61 flights compared to the same period last year. It is followed by Barcelona-El Prat Airport, which will operate a total of 646 movements today, while Gran Canaria Airport has programmed 268 operations. Closing the list are Málaga and Palma de Mallorca airports, which will register 216 and 197 flights, respectively.
