Third Lane for TF-5 Motorway to Ease Tenerife Traffic

Major Tender Launched for TF-5 Third Lane

The Public Works Department of the Canary Islands Government has launched the tender for works to add a third lane to the TF-5 motorway between Guamasa and Tenerife North Airport, in the direction of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This project is considered a strategic move to enhance the capacity and fluidity of traffic on this key transport artery.

Project Scope and Budget

The works have a base tender budget of €66,401,344.71, and interested companies can submit bids until 9 February. The stretch from Guamasa to the Airport will be widened from two to three lanes, enabling it to absorb more traffic on one of the island’s most congested road network points.

Redesigning Key Junctions

The project includes the remodelling of the Guamasa and San Lázaro junctions, as well as the construction of a new direct link to the North Airport. This will allow traffic heading to and from the north and south to be separated. Consequently, vehicles arriving from the north will access the airport via the new Airport link, instead of continuing to San Lázaro as is currently the case.

Targeting Congestion Relief

This reorganisation will enable some traffic to exit the most congested section of the TF-5 earlier, directly contributing to an improvement in the overall smoothness of traffic flow, the Department stated.
