Arucas Inaugurates New €5m Pedestrian and Cycle Path

Arucas opens new pedestrian and cycle route

The town of Arucas in Gran Canaria inaugurated this Friday a new pedestrian walkway with a dedicated cycle lane. The route runs from the roundabout at the Mesón Canario to the Pasaje Venezuela in the Santidad neighbourhood. This road infrastructure has been named ‘Juana y Ramón Abelardo’ in homage to two local community movement leaders who campaigned for years to make this new facility a reality for residents.

A €5 million investment in connectivity

The Cabildo de Gran Canaria (Island Council) detailed in a statement that nearly five million euros have been invested in the new infrastructure. The opening ceremony was also attended by the Minister for Territorial Policy and former mayor of Arucas, Ángel Víctor Torres. He congratulated the local residents, stating that this project “brings the population centres closer to the town centre, and this means safety, because it allows people to walk away from vehicles.”

Overcoming challenges for community benefit

Torres also referred to the fact that “the project has faced numerous difficulties along the way,” which made the achievement all the more satisfying. “There have been problems with the land, with expropriations, with tenders, with construction costs, and then there has been a Cabildo de Gran Canaria that, without a doubt, rose to the occasion,” he said, praising former president Antonio Morales for backing “an infrastructure that is municipal in character, as was its essence, but which undoubtedly also provided security for connections and roads under island jurisdiction.” He concluded, “Congratulations to the Cabildo and the Town Council, because when administrations work together, people applaud it, and my applause goes to the residents of this area.”

Years of municipal and community effort

For his part, the Mayor of Arucas, Juan Jesús Facundo, thanked the Cabildo de Gran Canaria for its involvement and financial support for the project. He praised the years of effort by the municipal government and the relentless campaign by local residents to see the completion of what he described as a costly project. The mayor stated it “will improve Santidad, the access area to the Mesón Canario, San Francisco Javier, and the Pasaje de Venezuela.”
