Tufia Beach Reopens After Positive Health Report
The Town Hall of Telde reopened Tufia beach this Wednesday after receiving a favourable report from the Canary Islands Government’s General Directorate of Public Health. The report recommends lifting the bathing prohibition following analysis carried out in this coastal area. The beach had been closed as a precaution after episodes of contamination from organic waste were detected at several municipal beaches. This pollution was linked to a mass mortality of fish in marine cages located off the coast of Salinetas.
Other Beaches Remain Closed Pending Further Tests
In a statement, the Town Hall reports that the latest analytical results confirm Tufia currently complies with all required health parameters, allowing for its safe reopening. The rest of the municipality’s beaches—Salinetas, Melenara, Aguadulce, Gando, and Ojos de Garza—remain closed, awaiting new technical reports to endorse their reopening. The council insists that no beach will open without a favourable health report, prioritising public safety at all times.
Mayor Inspects Coastline Amid Hopes for Further Reopenings
On Wednesday morning, Telde’s mayor, Juan Antonio Peña, toured the municipal coastline accompanied by technicians from the Deputy Ministry of Emergencies and Water, its head Marcos José Lorenzo Martín, Public Health technicians, and the municipal Beach technician. This inspection visit allowed them to confirm a considerable improvement in the general state of the beaches. Following this inspection, it is hoped that if the positive trend continues, the progressive reopening of another cove could be considered in the coming hours. In this regard, Public Health will carry out further inspections and sample-taking this Thursday, the results of which will be decisive for making new decisions.
Investigation and Accountability Continue
Mayor Peña stressed that the reopening of Tufia does not mean the incident is closed or that the council’s actions have concluded. “Opening a beach does not mean turning the page. The municipal investigation continues, as does the demand for explanations, actions, and accountability. Our obligation is to guarantee safety today, but also to defend the coastline of Telde tomorrow,” highlighted Peña. The Town Hall recalls that, from the first moment, it has acted with technical criteria, transparency, and prudence, maintaining the closure of the beaches and reinforcing coastal surveillance with its own resources, such as the Local Police and its specialised drone unit, in addition to coordinating with other authorities.
The council will continue to inform citizens about any developments related to the state of the beaches and the decisions made, always based on official reports and health criteria.
