La Palma Acquires 53 Homes for Volcano-Displaced Residents

Key Milestone in Post-Eruption Recovery

The Cabildo of La Palma has reached a key milestone in the island’s recovery roadmap following the volcanic eruption. It has finalised the definitive acquisition of a building under construction in the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane. The 53 homes resulting from this operation will be allocated on a priority and social-need basis to people affected by the volcanic eruption who currently reside in container and wooden houses.

Financing and Institutional Collaboration

The island’s president, Sergio Rodríguez, stated in a release that the acquisition, which cost €10.3 million, was executed by the Cabildo with funding provided by the Ministry of the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security of the Government of the Canary Islands. Furthermore, the president thanked the Government of the Canary Islands for its “sensitivity and tremendous effort,” specifically mentioning the Minister of the Presidency, Nieves Lady Barreto, and the Deputy Minister for Economic and Social Recovery, Pedro Afonso, for making this project a reality.

A Significant Legislative and Institutional Effort

Sergio Rodríguez emphasised that this achievement required considerable institutional and legislative effort. “To reach this point, new laws have had to be created and the Cabildo has had to step forward and request housing competencies, which it did not previously have. This demonstrates the commitment of both administrations,” he pointed out.

First of Many Steps in Housing Strategy

The operation required months of work, first to identify potential properties that could be acquired and then to formalise the entire process, ensuring compliance with all parameters of the new housing law. Sergio Rodríguez stressed that the acquisition of this building is the example of the culmination of all that work, but it will not be the only one, as they continue to “make progress” on the housing objectives set for this legislative term.
