Binter’s ATC and La Laguna University Forge Aviation Training Pact

Strategic Partnership for Aviation Training

Aeronautical Training Canarias (ATC), a company within the Binter system, and the University of La Laguna (ULL), through its General Foundation, have signed a collaboration agreement to develop training and upskilling initiatives in aeronautics and air transport and logistics. The signing ceremony took place at the ATC headquarters and was attended by Binter’s General Coordinator, Santiago Guerra, and the Rector of the ULL, Francisco García.

Commitment to Canarian Development and Specialised Employment

Santiago Guerra stated that this agreement is another example of Binter’s commitment to the Canary Islands, its inhabitants, and its socio-economic development, as well as the creation of specialised jobs that add value to the islands’ labour market. “This agreement allows ULL students to be at the forefront of specific in-person and online training in a highly specialised sector with growing demand for professionals,” Guerra affirmed.

For his part, Francisco García emphasised that signing this agreement with Aeronautical Training Canarias is a strategic action for the University of La Laguna. It aligns with the university’s goal of providing training and skills development in collaboration with local businesses, in this case within the aeronautical and air logistics sector. “This company is an accredited vocational training centre that offers a aircraft maintenance technician qualification, the only one of its kind in the Canary Islands,” he explained.

Building on Previous Collaboration

ATC has already collaborated with the ULL and its foundation on a pro bono basis on initiatives in the digitalisation and digital transformation of transport and logistics. These projects identified a series of opportunities, particularly those related to expanding the training offer in a booming sector so vital to the Canaries. Consequently, this new agreement will enable the development of training plans suited to the demands of sector companies and the cultivation of specialised professionals.

The pact will enhance the skills of university graduates in aeronautics and associated logistics and transport. It will help diversify the training offer, identify new opportunities in research, teaching, and knowledge transfer in these areas, and will also serve to consolidate relations between the ULL, its foundation, ATC, and Binter.

Key Objectives of the New Alliance

Through this collaboration, the partners will design a training offer related to aeronautics and associated logistics and transport, in line with sector demand, while promoting the micro-credential model. They will create shared workspaces between the involved parties and other key agents to identify new opportunities for research, teaching, and knowledge transfer. Furthermore, they will identify a ‘bank’ of teachers and researchers who can contribute to the teaching and research activities undertaken.

ATC: A Leading Training Centre

Aeronautical Training Canarias is a benchmark for training in aeronautics and air transport and logistics. Its 360º campus has a triple focus: to generate a pool of professionals in the Canary Islands and develop the aeronautical field; to be a centre specialised in training for ATR and Embraer aircraft; and to function as a placement agency to improve employability in the sector nationally.

It is noteworthy that the centre is accredited by the SEPE (State Public Employment Service) as a Private Placement Agency and can offer employability in the aeronautical sector of over 90% through agreements and collaborations with the main Canarian airlines. It has also established agreements with several cabin crew schools to grant scholarships to students, thereby generating new professionals to enter the job market.

Its training offer includes courses for aeronautical maintenance technicians—a dual training programme accessible with or without prior qualifications—leading to an AESA (Spanish Aviation Safety and Security Agency) aircraft maintenance licence and/or a higher degree in aeromechanical maintenance of turbine-engine aircraft. Its training catalogue also includes specific airport training, dangerous goods handling, auditing, and recurrent aeronautical maintenance training.
