Gran Canaria’s New Solar Projects Boost Green Energy

Gran Canaria Advances Local Clean Energy with New Solar Projects

The Island Energy Council of Gran Canaria, in collaboration with local municipalities, has launched a tender for two new photovoltaic installations in the towns of Valsequillo and Agaete. This initiative is a significant step in promoting the production of local, zero-kilometer clean energy on the island, directly powering community facilities.

Valsequillo’s Solar Canopy and Storage System

In Valsequillo, the project involves installing a solar canopy over the parking lot at the Las Vegas sports court. With a capacity of 220.32 kWp, the installation is projected to generate approximately 351,475 kWh per year. This clean energy production will result in an estimated reduction of 122.4 tons of CO2 emissions annually. The project, with a tender budget of €230,068.04, also includes a 430 kWh energy storage system. This battery will allow for more efficient management of the generated power and increase the energy autonomy of the associated consumption.

Agaete’s Sports Complex Gets a Green Upgrade

For Agaete, the tender covers the installation of a gable-roof structure with photovoltaic panels over the paddle tennis courts at the Fuente Santa Sports Complex. This dual-purpose project will not only generate renewable energy but also improve the area by providing better shade, thermal comfort, and protection from the heat in this heavily used public space. With a total budget of €932,554.24, this installation will have a capacity of 274.05 kWp, enabling it to produce around 446,673 kWh per year and prevent the emission of approximately 155 tons of CO2 annually. This project does not include a storage system, as the complex’s energy consumption is stable and well-suited for direct use.

Funding and Bidding Process

Both projects are partially financed by NextGenerationEU funds through Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Interested companies can submit their bids until December 4, 2025, via the Public Sector Procurement Platform, where all the necessary documentation is available.

Transforming Everyday Spaces

Raúl García Brink, Councillor for Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, emphasized the broader impact of these initiatives: “With this type of project, we demonstrate that the energy transition also transforms everyday spaces, making them more efficient and comfortable for citizens.” This approach shows how sustainability investments can directly enhance the quality of life in local communities.
