Major Conservation Project for Maspalomas Dunes

Major Conservation Project Launched for Maspalomas Dunes

The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has announced a significant new project for the Maspalomas Dunes Natural Reserve, with a budget of €378,187.96 and a four-month execution period. This initiative, titled “Enhancing the Value of the Maspalomas Dunes Natural Reserve,” represents a key action within the Green and Sustainable Transition Axis of the Impulsa Maspalomas Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan.

EU Funding and Project Goals

The project is financed by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU funds, as part of the Spanish Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. The work will focus on regulating access and transit within the reserve through conservation, maintenance, and improvement tasks across its various zones.

Protecting Flora and Managing Visitor Flow

Raúl García Brink, Minister of Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge for the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, explained that the contract will “improve the protection of unique plant species, such as the ‘balancones’ (Traganum moquinii), through cordoning.” The project also includes the rehabilitation of existing trail boundaries and, notably, the improvement and reinforcement of the Exclusion Zone delimitation, which will “promote orderly use” of the fragile dune system.

Infrastructure Improvements and Biodiversity

Furthermore, work will be carried out on other elements of the environment that are in poor condition. This includes repairs to the pergola roof and the perimeter fence around the pond area, the wooden fencing along the promenade, and the ironwork gate at the park entrance. These actions aim to organize visitor flows, reduce human pressure on the dune ecosystem, and preserve the biodiversity of this unique enclave, which is designated both a Special Natural Reserve and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Bidding Process and Long-Term Vision

The tender is already published on the Public Sector Procurement Platform, and interested companies can submit their bids until November 10, 2025. All relevant information is available on the CIEGC contractor profile and via the provided link. García Brink concluded, “Through these actions we improve safety, preserve the natural environment, and maintain a suitable image for a space of high environmental and touristic value. With this intervention, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria reinforces its commitment to climate change adaptation, coastal preservation, and the responsible management of natural resources, aligning the island’s tourism model with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.”
