Los Cristianos Port to Get Major Access Upgrade

Major Accessibility Upgrade Planned for Los Cristianos Port

The Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility has announced the tender for a contract to draft a feasibility study aimed at dramatically improving access from the port of Los Cristianos to the TF-1 highway. This initiative, driven by the General Directorate of Road Infrastructure, comes with a base tender budget of €597,898.59.

Addressing Southern Tenerife’s Traffic Challenges

The primary goal is to “update and develop a comprehensive proposal that addresses the accessibility issues in this southern zone of Tenerife,” the Ministry stated. The project seeks to define improvement alternatives that will provide a level of service worthy of the port’s status, connecting it efficiently to the high-capacity road network. This is a critical upgrade, as Los Cristianos is “one of Spain’s ports of general interest with the highest passenger traffic,” the Ministry emphasized.

A Direct Tunnel to Revolutionize Traffic Flow

Central to the planned improvements is the design of a new tunnel that will create a direct link from the port’s dock to Chayofita Avenue. This underground access route is intended to channel the significant traffic generated by the port infrastructure in a “more efficient” way.

Navigating Geological Complexities

The engineering project presents a unique challenge: the proposed tunnel must pass through a volcanic cone composed of pyroclastic material, with existing buildings on the surface above. This necessitates a highly detailed feasibility study and preliminary ground treatments to absolutely guarantee the safety of all existing structures and installations.

Comprehensive Study and Tender Process

The forthcoming study will include an extensive geological and geotechnical survey of the land, a thorough traffic analysis of all roads converging in the intervention area, and a traffic volume campaign. Each potential solution will be evaluated based on its level of service. Using a multi-criteria analysis, the most suitable alternative will be selected, weighing functional, economic, and environmental factors.

The Ministry confirms that the option deemed most recommendable in this study will be the one developed in subsequent design and construction projects. Both the feasibility study and the later design projects are backed by a €5 million contribution from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

Companies interested in undertaking the study can submit their applications electronically via the Public Sector Procurement Platform (PLACSP) until 2:00 PM (Canary Islands time) on September 19, 2025. All necessary information and documentation are available on the contracting profile of the Vice-Ministry of Infrastructure of the Government of the Canary Islands and on the Public Sector Procurement Platform.
