La Palma’s Starlight Status Renewed for Four More Years
The Cabildo de La Palma (Island Council), through its Tourism Department led by Councillor Raquel Rebollo, is celebrating the renewal of its Starlight certifications. The island’s status as both a Starlight Reserve and a Starlight Tourist Destination has been officially extended for another four years, cementing its reputation as one of the planet’s most privileged enclaves for celestial observation.
A Global Benchmark for Astronomy
Councillor Rebollo emphasized that “this renewal once again highlights the quality of our sky, which is among the best in the world for astronomy.” She added that “La Palma continues to champion astrotourism as a driver of economic and social development, always with a vision that is respectful of our territory and our communities, following a sustainable model.”
Commitment to Dark Sky Conservation
The renewal was granted by the Starlight Foundation, an entity backed by UNESCO and the World Tourism Organization, which promotes the protection of the night sky as a natural, scientific, and cultural heritage. Antonia Varela, Managing Director of the Starlight Foundation, noted that “this renewal reaffirms the firm commitment of the Cabildo de La Palma and the local town councils to the conservation of the night sky.”
A Pioneer in Astrotourism
For over a decade, La Palma has been a pioneer in implementing night sky protection policies. This includes specific regulations on light pollution, the promotion of astrotourism-adapted accommodations and services, and the training of specialized guides and professionals. The island council has reaffirmed its commitment to continue working with municipalities, the tourism sector, and local society to strengthen this strategic development line that combines science, culture, sustainability, and the economy.
A Unique and Sustainable Destination
With this renewal, La Palma remains one of the few places in the world to hold both certifications uninterrupted since first receiving them on December 20, 2012. This achievement demonstrates that it is possible to build a quality tourism model with its own unique identity that is deeply respectful of the environment, offering travelers an unparalleled opportunity to connect with the cosmos.
