Major Shift in Canary Islands Ferry Services
The Canary Islands government expressed hope on Monday that Baleària’s acquisition of the operations and traffic rights of Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea will prove positive for the archipelago. Officials emphasized the critical need to maintain seamless maritime connectivity between the islands following the announcement.
Government Optimistic for Stable Ferry Future
Pablo Rodríguez, the regional Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, stated that after navigating “many difficulties” in recent years, this operation could be “very positive for the stability and future” of the Canarian company. He highlighted that Armas Trasmediterránea is “fundamental for the archipelago’s maritime connectivity” and expressed hope that Baleària’s move would not disrupt this, ultimately working towards “an increasingly cohesive and connected Canary Islands.”
Continuity of Service Is the Top Priority
Echoing this sentiment, the Director General of Transport and Mobility, María Fernández, noted that in such processes, “the most important thing is to guarantee the continuity of service, safeguard jobs, and maintain maritime connectivity in the Canaries.” She also pointed out that, so far, neither shipping company has notified the Ministry of any operational changes that would affect inter-island connections, which are a lifeline for both residents and the tourism economy.
Details of the Baleària Acquisition
Baleària confirmed it has reached agreements with the owners of the Canarian company Armas Trasmediterránea to acquire its operations on the Canary Islands and Alboran Sea routes, plus a portion of the Strait of Gibraltar traffic.
