Canary Islands Invest €587K in Sustainable Park Projects

Canary Islands Allocates €587K for Sustainable Park Initiatives

The Canary Islands government has announced €587,800 in funding for sustainable projects focused on biodiversity conservation around the islands’ national parks. The initiative, managed by the Department of Ecological Transition and Energy, aims to stimulate socio-economic growth while protecting these vital ecosystems.

Who Can Apply?

Grants will be fully subsidized by Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge through the Autonomous National Parks Agency (OAPN). Eligible applicants include municipalities, small businesses, freelancers, nonprofits, and private individuals—provided they operate within the influence zones of the Canary Islands’ four national parks. Applications must be submitted via the official link by August 19.

Conservation Meets Community Growth

Mariano H. Zapata, the regional minister, emphasized the dual goal of these projects: “We’re committed to preserving these spaces by creating jobs through ecologically valuable initiatives that respect biodiversity.” The funding will support efforts like natural and architectural heritage restoration, sustainable resource use, traditional culture promotion, and visitor services or artisan product sales.

Eligible Municipalities

The program targets towns near national parks across Tenerife (e.g., Adeje, La Orotava), La Gomera (e.g., San Sebastián, Vallehermoso), Lanzarote (Tinajo, Yaiza), and La Palma (e.g., Santa Cruz de la Palma, Garafía). An initial €50,000 has been released to fast-track early applications, with the full €587,800 budget expected by 2025.
