Could Mallorca’s Taxi Model Work in Tenerife?
The Southern Tenerife Business and Professional Association (CEST) has called for an in-depth study of Mallorca’s current taxi service model, proposing it as a potential solution to improve mobility across the island. This initiative aims to evaluate whether the Balearic Islands’ approach could be successfully implemented in Tenerife’s tourist-heavy regions.
A Collaborative Approach to Taxi Services
Mallorca’s system operates through a cooperative agreement involving 80% of the island’s taxi licenses, concentrated in just eight of its 53 municipalities. CEST president Javier Cabrera highlights how this model “optimizes available resources, reduces empty vehicle trips, and ultimately enhances service efficiency.” The association also notes its potential to strengthen transportation options during peak tourist seasons when demand surges.
Addressing Tenerife’s Mobility Crisis
Cabrera emphasizes the urgent need for alternatives, stating, “The mobility crisis and taxi service inefficiencies in tourist areas demand innovative solutions.” He frames transportation as a critical challenge for southern Tenerife’s economic and tourism development, adding, “Any proposal that could improve transport quality and availability deserves serious consideration.”
Seeking Cross-Sector Solutions
The business group stresses the importance of collaborative evaluation with public authorities and taxi operators to develop solutions benefiting professionals, residents, and visitors alike. Taxi representatives have clarified that Mallorca’s agreement operates seasonally—currently active 24/7 from July 30 through September 30, 2025, in Palma, Calviá, Esporles, and Valdemossa, with planned reactivation from June 1 to September 30, 2026.
Opening the Dialogue
CEST’s proposal seeks to spark informed discussion about adapting successful models from comparable destinations. By examining how other regions tackle similar transportation challenges, Tenerife could develop tailored solutions for this pressing community issue.
