Canary Islands Lead in Tourism Growth
Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodations—including apartments, campsites, rural lodgings, and hostels—reached 15.1 million in June 2024, marking an 8% increase compared to the same month last year, according to data released by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE). The Canary Islands emerged as the top destination for apartment stays, with over 2 million overnight bookings (+13.6%). Lanzarote recorded the highest occupancy rate (83.3%), while Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and Arona were the most popular tourist spots. Resident stays rose by 6.9%, while non-resident stays grew by 9%, with an average stay of 3.9 nights per traveler.
Apartment Stays on the Rise
Tourist apartments saw a 6.9% annual increase in overnight stays, with resident bookings up 6.8% and non-resident bookings rising 7%. The average stay lengthened by 3% to 4.7 nights. Occupancy averaged 41.2% (+4.2% year-on-year), climbing to 46.6% on weekends (+6.2%). Non-residents accounted for 66.7% of stays, with the UK as the leading source market (34.5%).
Camping Gains Popularity
Campsites reported an 11.2% annual increase in June, with resident stays up 8.4% and non-resident stays surging 16.2%. Average occupancy reached 44.9% (+6.2%), peaking at 49.6% on weekends (+6.8%). Non-residents made up 38.4% of campers, with the Netherlands as the top source country (23.3%). Catalonia led in total overnight stays (3.1 million, +18.5%), while La Rioja had the highest occupancy (68.2%). The Costa Brava was the most sought-after coastal area, though the Costa Blanca achieved the highest occupancy (71.1%). Torroella de Montgrí, Mont-roig del Camp, and Benidorm stood out as key destinations.
Rural Tourism Thrives
Rural accommodations saw a 9.6% jump in overnight stays, with resident bookings up 7.3% and non-resident bookings soaring 13.6%. Occupancy rose to 23.1% (+10.7%), reaching 40.6% on weekends (+15.2%). The Balearic Islands were the most popular rural destination, with over 225,000 stays (+0.1%) and the highest occupancy (63%). Mallorca led in overnight stays, while Menorca achieved the top occupancy rate (72%).
Hostel Stays Decline
Hostel bookings fell 5.2% annually, with resident stays down 4.4% and non-resident stays dropping 6.1%. Despite the decline, average occupancy edged up 1.5% to 37.2%, rising to 41.1% on weekends (+0.7%). Galicia was the most popular hostel destination (142,000 stays), while Cantabria had the highest occupancy (68.1%).
Price Increases Across Accommodations
Prices rose across all accommodation types in June: tourist apartments increased by 5.1%, campsites by 6.3%, and rural lodgings by 11.1%, the sharpest hike.
