Topographic studies from the University of La Laguna measure this shadow stretching 40-60 kilometers—long enough to reach La Gomera at dawn and graze Gran Canaria at dusk. Three unique factors combine to create this spectacle: Teide’s isolated conical shape projects a crisp outline without competing landforms, the ocean horizon acts as a flawless flat screen, and the subtropical trade winds maintain atmospheric clarity that sharpens the shadow’s edges.
Where and When to Witness the Phenomenon
To see this natural wonder, simply position yourself at elevation facing away from the sun. At sunrise, the shadow stretches toward La Gomera and appears most vividly from the Rambleta Viewpoint (3,555m). Sunset transforms the shadow into a westward arrow pointing toward Gran Canaria, best observed from the trail to Pico Viejo or slightly lower at the Altavista Refuge. The shadow’s length varies with atmospheric conditions—haze or humidity shorten it, while clear skies extend its reach. Scientists even use it as an informal optical indicator of Canarian air quality.
