Spain’s Most Advanced Research Ship Debuts in Canary Islands

Spain’s Most Advanced Research Ship Arrives in the Canary Islands

The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) unveiled its newest and most advanced oceanographic vessel, the Odón de Buen, in a ceremony at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife this Saturday. The event brought together representatives from local and regional governments, Canarian universities, research centers, and media outlets. As the largest, most modern, and sustainable ship in Spain’s scientific fleet, the Odón de Buen will significantly enhance marine research in the archipelago.

A Flagship for Marine Research

Rosa Figueroa, director of the IEO-CSIC, emphasized that the vessel will serve Spain’s entire scientific community while maintaining a strong presence in Canarian waters. Measuring 84 meters in length and accommodating 58 people, the ship boasts an impressive 50-day operational range. It is equipped with cutting-edge laboratories, autonomous underwater vehicles, and high-resolution sonar systems, enabling studies on deep-sea ecosystems, climate change impacts, marine biodiversity, fisheries, and underwater volcanology.

Innovation and Sustainability at Sea

Built in Vigo by Astilleros Armón with contributions from over 25 Spanish companies, the Odón de Buen represents an €85 million investment, funded by Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation with support from the European Regional Development Fund. Its hybrid diesel-gas propulsion system significantly reduces emissions, aligning with modern sustainability standards. Jordi Sorribas, director of CSIC’s Marine Technology Unit, confirmed that the ship has met all performance expectations during its testing phase.

First Mission and Future Research

Following its official presentation, the vessel will undergo final preparations in Canarian waters before embarking on its first scientific mission in August. The IEO operates a robust marine research network, including nine coastal oceanographic centers, five marine aquaculture facilities, twelve tide gauges, a satellite imaging station, and a fleet of five research vessels—among which the Odón de Buen, Ramón Margalef, and Ángeles Alvariño stand out as flagship assets.
