Gran Canaria Stadium’s Transformation for World Cup 2030
Following the demolition of unused structures—including the tower between the Naciente and South stands, scheduled for this year—the ambitious “La Nube” project to renovate Gran Canaria Stadium for the 2030 FIFA World Cup is set to begin in 2026. These plans were confirmed by Aridany Romero, Sports Councillor of Gran Canaria’s Cabildo, during a technical meeting evaluating progress since the island was selected as a host venue. Attendees included Cabildo President Antonio Morales, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Mayor Carolina Darias, Regional Sports Councillor Poli Suárez, and Minister of Territorial Policy Ángel Víctor Torres.
A Landmark Renovation Project
As one of Spain’s 11 host venues for the 2030 World Cup—shared with Portugal and Morocco—Gran Canaria Stadium will undergo extensive renovations under the “La Nube” project by architecture firm L35. The tender process for construction is currently being drafted and will be finalized by late 2024. Meanwhile, the Insular Sports Institute, led by Romero, is refining the stadium’s future business model after consulting experts and attending industry events.
Phased Construction Timeline
Romero outlined the project’s phased approach: “The first stage, starting before the end of 2025, will demolish unused structures like the tower and two concrete cylinders between the Naciente and South stands. We’re using advanced technology to minimize disruptions for fans and UD Las Palmas matches. Full-scale construction will commence in 2026.”
A Historic Opportunity for the Canaries
Minister Ángel Víctor Torres highlighted the global significance of the 2030 World Cup, noting its unprecedented media reach. “The archipelago won’t just watch it on screens—they’ll experience it live at Gran Canaria Stadium,” he said. Cabildo President Antonio Morales added, “This event proves our Atlantic island can meet grand challenges.” Mayor Darias celebrated the countdown to the tournament, while Las Palmas Football Federation President José Juan Arencibia praised Gran Canaria’s rigorous preparation as a model for other host cities.
