Adeje’s ambitious green transformation
The southern Tenerife municipality of Adeje will welcome a spectacular new green space within the next year—a sprawling 35,000 m² area at the town’s main entrance near El Galeón. Announced by the local government, this project forms part of Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga’s commitment to sustainability, aligning with Adeje’s 2020 Climate and Sustainable Energy Action Plan (PACES) and the European Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.
Climate commitments take root
“Our dedication to reducing the municipality’s carbon footprint is absolute,” states Mayor Rodríguez Fraga, highlighting years of environmental initiatives. The new green belt along the highway represents another step toward Adeje’s vision of a sustainable community that respects its surroundings. When fully completed, the area will expand to 70,000 m², featuring walkable paths and public amenities.
A forest fighting climate change
This €800,000 investment will create a thermophilic forest—a unique ecosystem bridging coastal scrubland and mountain woodlands. Comprising 29 native and non-native species acclimated to Tenerife, the forest is projected to absorb 20 tons of CO2 annually. The project also aims to rehabilitate degraded land, increase shaded areas, and enhance the landscape along the Southern Highway.
Circular economy in action
Innovative sustainability measures include using renewable energy, treated wastewater, and compost from hotel organic waste via Adeje’s Circular Tourist Communities initiative. Mayor Rodríguez Fraga confirms plans for similar green spaces across the municipality, with construction set to begin by September 2025 and complete within 10 months.
Adeje’s sustainability legacy
Adeje’s environmental commitment dates to 2010, when it joined Spain’s Biodiversity Network. Notable achievements include Adeje Verde—Canarias’ largest energy community generating 99 kW for local residents and businesses—and the 30,000 m² Bosque de Las Nieves, which produces food, creates jobs, and absorbs 18 tons of CO2 yearly. The recent WAVE innovation center in La Caleta pioneers sustainable desalination techniques, cementing Adeje’s status as a leader in green tourism.
