Tenerife’s €10M Boost for Sustainable Development
The Tenerife Island Council has allocated over €10 million to strategic projects in Buenavista del Norte, aiming to promote sustainable development through responsible tourism, affordable housing, and local culture. The announcement was made by Vice President and Tourism Minister Lope Afonso during an institutional visit alongside other government officials and Mayor Eva García. The tour included key infrastructure sites like Punta de Teno’s dock, the Municipal Cinema Theater, and a newly acquired residential building.
Revitalizing Punta de Teno’s Dock
One of the flagship projects is the €4 million upgrade of Punta de Teno’s dock, part of the “Tenerife and the Sea” program. The improvements will enhance accessibility and functionality for this historically significant fishing port. An additional €210,000 has been earmarked for upgrading the surrounding area, including pathways, parking, and pavement near the Teno Lighthouse. Afonso emphasized the goal of fostering “high-quality rural tourism that respects nature and supports local communities” through regenerative planning.
Cultural Revival in Buenavista
The island’s investment plan also prioritizes local culture. Officials inspected the recently restored Municipal Cinema Theater, a €3 million project funded by the Cultural Infrastructure Plan. Culture Minister José Carlos Acha stressed that “access to culture should be a right for all municipalities, not just urban centers,” highlighting the theater’s role in social and territorial cohesion.
Affordable Housing Initiatives
Housing Minister Sonia Hernández presented a newly acquired residential building behind the Town Hall, supported by a €1 million council contribution under the Housing Land Program. The project aims to improve access to affordable homes, alongside upgrades to public lighting and basic amenities to enhance residents’ quality of life.
Local and Regional Collaboration
Mayor Eva García praised the council’s support, calling the meeting “highly productive” and noting that projects like the cinema and dock “wouldn’t be possible without this cooperation.” She also hinted that the cinema’s tender process could move forward after summer. Afonso reaffirmed the council’s commitment to “a more cohesive, sustainable Tenerife with opportunities for all municipalities, especially in the northern regions.”
