Ferry breakdown near Órzola port creates tense moments for travelers
A ferry traveling the popular Caleta de Sebo (La Graciosa) – Órzola (Lanzarote) route experienced a dramatic breakdown this afternoon with approximately 150 people on board, including school pupils from Arrecife. The incident occurred just meters from the Órzola quay, one of the main gateways for visitors exploring the pristine island of La Graciosa.
Double engine failure creates dangerous situation
The Líneas Romero vessel suffered a breakdown in both engines approximately fifteen meters from the breakwater, with swells that concerned passengers who feared the boat might hit the rocks. According to initial reports, one engine failed during the journey, and the crew had planned to dock using only the remaining engine. However, the second engine also failed during the docking maneuver, leaving the ferry without power in a precarious position near the rocky coastline.
Quick thinking prevents disaster
Fortunately, another Biosfera Express boat traveling the opposite route from Órzola to La Graciosa managed to execute a crucial maneuver that prevented the damaged vessel from hitting the rocks. “The most delicate point was when it stopped at the entrance to the mouth of the port of Órzola, only about fifteen meters from the breakwater,” passengers described. The disabled ferry activated its horn to warn the approaching Biosfera Express that it was damaged and without steering capability.
The rescue boat successfully hooked onto the damaged ferry and moved it away from the dangerous rocky area. “They hooked one boat to another and moved us away from the rocks,” passengers explained, praising the quick response that likely prevented a serious maritime accident.
Professional crew management during crisis
Throughout the hour and a half that passengers remained without power, the Líneas Romero crew demonstrated exemplary professionalism. Passengers highlighted how the crew kept everyone informed about the situation, worked to reassure concerned travelers, and provided regular updates during the tense period. This level of communication proved crucial in maintaining calm among the 150 people aboard, including the young students from an Arrecife school.
Safe return ensures continued island connectivity
While the Biosfera ferry that provided initial assistance couldn’t tow the damaged vessel due to its own passenger load, it successfully moved the disabled boat to a safe area. Another Líneas Romero vessel arrived to complete the rescue operation, towing the passengers back to Caleta de Sebo where they could transfer to another boat for their return journey to Órzola. This incident highlights the importance of the ferry connections that make La Graciosa accessible to the thousands of visitors who come to experience this unspoiled Canarian paradise each year.
