Record summer season expected for Spanish travel agencies
Spanish travel agencies are gearing up for what promises to be a record-breaking summer season, with booking increases ranging between 5% and 15% compared to last year. The Canary Islands have emerged as one of the most sought-after national destinations, offering travelers an irresistible combination of year-round sunshine, diverse landscapes, and authentic Spanish island culture.
Seven out of ten agencies estimate that growth will fall between these two percentages compared to last summer, while 18% expect to match last year’s figures, and only one in ten believe bookings will be lower. According to Jordi Martí, president of the Corporate Association of Specialised Travel Agencies (Acave), this trend demonstrates that “the travel sector shows year after year that holidays are increasingly seen as a basic necessity,” as demand continues to grow despite rising prices.
Declining demand for US travel benefits other destinations
On the other hand, 75% of agencies working with outbound tourism have detected a significant fall in demand for travel to the United States, while travel to Israel has also been paralyzed due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The unpopularity of the US government, headed by Donald Trump, stands as the primary reason travelers cite for avoiding the country, followed by concerns about strict border controls.
Travel agencies have witnessed bookings to the United States “plummet” since Trump took office, although previously made reservations have been maintained. This collapse of the US as a preferred destination for European travelers and visitors from other parts of the world could ultimately benefit Spain, particularly destinations like the Canary Islands, if the country succeeds in attracting a portion of these redirected visitors.
Emerging international destinations gain popularity
Among international destinations experiencing increased demand, Asian countries stand out prominently, including China, Japan, and Vietnam, offering travelers unique cultural experiences and exotic landscapes. South and Central America follow closely behind, along with the Mediterranean coast and North Africa, providing diverse options for adventurous travelers seeking authentic experiences.
Cruises, other African countries, and European capitals round out the list of preferred destinations for this summer season, indicating a strong appetite for varied travel experiences ranging from luxury ocean voyages to cultural city breaks.
