Emergency landing at César Manrique Airport
A Jet2 airline plane that took off this Monday morning from Lanzarote’s César Manrique Airport bound for Nottingham (UK) had to return to the aerodrome shortly after takeoff due to the detection of smoke in the cabin. As reported by the Emergency Consortium to La Voz de Lanzarote, the pilots of flight EXS87MD opted to return to the ground as a precaution after detecting smoke.
Swift response from emergency services
Once the plane had landed safely, firefighters proceeded to inspect the aircraft to locate the source of the incident. Images of the incident show the immediate arrival of the fire brigade when the aircraft touched down. Civil Guard personnel were also on the scene to assist in the safety procedures, demonstrating the well-coordinated emergency response at this major tourist gateway to the Canary Islands.
Passenger safety and airport operations
Initially, passengers remained on board while waiting to determine whether the aircraft was fit to continue the flight or whether another aircraft would be required. Eventually, all passengers were disembarked as a safety precaution. Airport sources indicated that the possible cause of the smoke could be traced to the left wing engine.
A passenger reported that around midday, air traffic was temporarily interrupted as the aircraft occupied the runway after landing. However, Aena reported that despite the incident, it was not necessary to divert any other flights, and the runway was reopened shortly afterwards, ensuring minimal disruption to travelers visiting this popular Canary Islands destination.
